GENERAL PRACTICE NURSING ALLIANCE

The General Practice Nursing Alliance (GPNA), established in 2001, seeks to develop and enhance nursing roles within general practice networks. Approximately 2,000 practice nurses throughout New Zealand come under the umbrella of the GPNA. The GPNA leadership consists of a core group of 6 experienced senior nurses who are committed to the ongoing professional development of nursing within the context of the general practice team.

Objectives

To enhance the contribution of nursing to general practice
To influence policy development
To influence the development of general practice and primary health care
To facilitate nursing activities and development
To advocate for increased nurse responsibility and leadership
To provide leadership and support for Alliance members

We will achieve these objectives by taking an instrumental role, in PHOs, IPAs and Government, in the development of policy and service delivery, the formation of strategic relationships with policy-makers and other nurse groups, the offering of mentoring and workshop programmes for members, and through leadership training.

We believe that at all levels of nurse involvement with IPAs, PHOs and MSOs there is collaboration between general practitioners and practice nurses to improve operational and organisational effectiveness.

This partnership, in delivery models, sector policy, professional development and nurse-led activities, is creating better health services for patients and better working environments for nurses; and we hope to build on this.
